AntWordProfiler
Free software for profiling the vocabulary of texts, created by Laurence Anthony.
What it is for in legal linguistics
A vocabulary profile shows how many of the words in a text are common vocabulary and how many are specialised. This is relevant for assessing the readability of contracts, rights notices, terms and conditions, or regulations for lay readers.
Basic steps
- Prepare the texts. Save texts as UTF-8 .txt files and anonymise personal data.
- Choose word lists. AntWordProfiler compares texts against levelled word lists. The bundled lists are English; for Indonesian texts you need to load your own Indonesian word lists.
- Run the profile. The tool reports what percentage of the words in the text each list covers, and which words fall outside the lists.
- Interpret. Low coverage by general word lists signals a lot of specialised vocabulary. For legal documents, this helps assess whether a lay reader can understand the text.
Indonesian word lists
IIFLL does not yet provide Indonesian word lists for AntWordProfiler. They will be added here once compiled and checked by the repository team.
The same practice corpus as the AntConc guide can be used: korpus-latihan-iifll.txt.
